Data recovery help

A friend of mine has gone to extraordinary lengths to try to recover data from a hard disk and failed. A recovery service can restore a significant portion of his data but it is quite costly. This was (at least) the second hard drive failure he's encountered this year and because of employment and circumstance many valuable photos and music will be lost if he does not get the data back.

Step 1: Microsoft buys Danger Inc.
Step 2: Microsoft hires Hitachi Data Systems to upgrade Danger's servers but does not have an offsite backup plan.
Step 3: HDS fails spectacularly losing all user data, making lots of Sidekick owners very angry.
Step 4: ...
Step 5: Profits?

I really feel sorry for T-Mobile and Sidekick users. When I heard Microsoft bought Danger, I thought they were just going to kill future Sidekick phones - but they have managed to harm existing Sidekick users and their mobile carrier as well.

Don't you want to rush out and buy a Windows Mobile phone now? :-P

So Microsoft has been fined $290 million dollars and has been ordered to stop shipping Word because some company has a patent on something blatantly obvious.
I wonder if they will change their corporate line on software patents.
